A sequel to cult hit Spring Breakers has been announced, with Bella Thorne leading a new cast of rebels.
Harmony Korine directed 2012’s Spring Breakers, the tale of a group of college students who steal money to attend spring break, only to become entangled with a dangerous drug dealer named Alien (James Franco). The film starred Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine in a crime drama that was a modest hit at the box office, but gained popularity online in the following years.
Now, Variety reports that a sequel titled Spring Breakers 2: Salvation Mountain, is being marketed at Cannes with a new cast and director. Bella Thorne will lead a cast that includes Ariel Martin (Zombies 2), Grace Van Dien (Stranger Things) and True Whitaker (Godfather of Harlem). Veteran filmmaker Matthew Bright will replace Korine in the director’s chair.

The article cites the official synopsis, saying the film will follow four “rebellious girls” who decide to go on a road trip for spring break. However, “when their trip explodes out of control, they’re forced to outrun the chaos they’ve created”.
It’s not the first time a sequel to the movie has been attempted. Spring Breakers: The Second Coming was announced in 2014, which would have been written by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and directed by music video filmmaker Jonas Åkerlund. The film was shelved in 2017 in favour of a short-form streaming series that also never came to light.
The star of the original film, James Franco, has fallen from favour in Hollywood ever since he faced accusations of sexual misconduct in the late 2010s. Recently, his former collaborator Seth Rogen said that recent comments Franco made about their friendship being over weren’t noticed by him. He told Esquire: “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar”.
