LaTanya Richardson Jackson has opened up about what it was like directing her husband, Marvel star Samuel L Jackson.
A successful actor and theatre director, Richardson Jackson has appeared in the films Malcolm X and Sleepless In Seattle, as well as TV shows such as Luke Cage and Grey’s Anatomy. She has been married to her fellow actor since 1980.
In 2022, she directed her husband in a Tony-nominated Broadway revival of The Piano Lesson. Appearing on the talk show Sherri, she looked back on the experience, saying: “That was a hard job!”
When asked if her husband took direction well, she replied: “No, because he’s so old, he thinks he knows everything. He’s been there, done that, and who are you”. When discussing the resolution to that issue, she said: “(I told him) ‘in this room, it’s about what I say. It’s not gonna be about you, it’s gonna be about me’”.
She continued: “We have to set the tone for how this is going to operate, because I need (the rest of the cast) listening to me. And he kind of went along, but there were days – you can ask anyone in the play there were days when he was like…” she then pulls a sulking expression, before saying that her reaction was: “Ok go sit over there then, because we’re over here working”.
Samuel L Jackson is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood history, with over 150 film roles and the title of the highest-grossing live-action actor of all time, with a total of $14.6billion combined box office from his movies.
Recently, the actor looked back on his performance in 1999 thriller Deep Blue Sea, saying: “I had no idea I was going to be as wet as I was. I was in water for a month: it was kind of wild.”
