Here’s my Daredevil: Born Again S1 Finale review and this one brutally sets the stage for what is to come in Season 2. I’ll start by saying this is a SPOILER FREE review, so not getting into how events unfolded here.
Traditional Season 1 Finale
I feel like Marvel’s return towards a more traditional seasonal TV format is realized in Episode 9. This feels like a TV series finale, in that there’s a climax, but also a lot of set up for the next season of the show.
I’ll also say that overall I feel like Season 2 could and should be a lot better than the overall feel of Season 1. I was critical in the last episode of how long it has taken in Season 1 for both Fisk and Murdock to go back to what we all want, Kingpin vs Daredevil. However, that seems like it is where we will begin Season 2 thankfully as both are firmly embracing their darker sides in this finale.
We obviously begin with the aftermath of last week’s ending. Matt has taken a bullet from Bullseye which was meant for Fisk. We therefore get a cold open showing us a glimpse into how we got to what we saw in Episode 1. This finale actually has some explanations which allow the series to better fit with the previous season of Daredevil on Netflix. There’s also a couple characters back for this finale which fans will be happy to see when they show up.
Brutal
Now this episode really is brutal. Some of the action scenes involving the AVTF are hard R content and without spoiling it’s not just those guys giving out. Meanwhile, we have a scene involving Fisk, which I won’t spoil, but this is beyond anything you’d expect to see even in the Netflix version of this show. Marvel is really allowing this show to be what it needs to be, firmly for adults, older adolescents.

The brutality fits with the theme of the episode which is essentially an escalation of all that’s come before. Most of the episode takes place across one night in NYC as we see Kingpin cement his power and Matt focused on stopping him. Thing is, don’t expect a happy ending here. I did say this episode is a big set up for Season 2 as well. This story is not over, we’re just having a break till Season 2 arrives next year.
Was it any Good?
Yes, that’s my honest take. I thoroughly enjoyed this Episode, in fact I think it ranks up there with Episode 4 (the bank one in case I got that mixed up) as the best episode of Season 1. Tonally, both episodes are miles away from one another, but they are both enjoyable in their own unique ways.
I think some fans were a bit disappointed that there were not a ton of cameos at the end. Daredevil isn’t really that kind of show folks. I also even saw complaints that ‘Spider-Man should be in this finale as there’s trouble in NYC.’ We know the show can’t just add in Spider-Man, even in a background shot. That’s just not good enough for some fans I guess. It’s perfectly reasonable to assume Spider-Man was active that night, I doubt the AVTF would pose him much of a threat. But since this is a Daredevil show, why would we suddenly need to see what every other New York based superhero was up to on a night of….. goings on?
That’s unrealistic criticism for me.
Episode GRADE: A
This episode was strong, the actions scenes were excellent and we got some cameos that made sense for the future. Plus the episode as said, does a good job of making you excited to see what happens in Season 2. Not Emmy award winning TV, but very fun and better than most MCU TV series thus far.
I’ll be watching Season 2, but also hoping for a better overall Season of TV than Season 1.
Season 1 GRADE: B+
A bit too samey compared to what we’ve seen at times. Cracks showed between the different showrunners and approaches. Some relationships felt unearned, but overall the show is headed in the right direction. Enjoyable, but not quite as good as Daredevil S1-3, yet.
