Porsche Design brand’s engineering and design philosophy is mirrored in a broad range of lifestyle products that automotive enthusiasts love to invest in. Now, the premium lifestyle brand has upped the ante with a collection of aluminum body suitcases. Pacific, Monos, Rimowa, and Zero Haliburton have already cashed in on the trend of aluminum suitcases known for their robustness and lightweight aesthetics. Now, Porsche Design has revealed a high-end suitcase collection inspired by the 1965 Porsche 911 Targa, which marked the brand’s start of single body cars.

The suitcases draw the design cues from the brushed aluminum roll bar on the sports car, and are a first of their kind for the luggage industry. The 911 Targa from the 60s was chosen as the inspiration since it was the first ever convertible design made out of brushed aluminum. To complete the task of creating a standout suitcase line-up, Porsche Design worked in close quarters with Italian luxury brand BRIC, who are known for its trusted luggage designs. The other Targa elements are apparent in the form of the smooth panels and the clean horizontal lines mirroring the aerodynamic silhouette of the sports car.

Designer: Porsche Design and BRIC

The suitcases in three variants – 102L checked bag, 72L suitcase, and the carry-on-friendly 40L options – give Porsche fans the freedom to choose their preferred travel buddy. Along with the signature silver gray look, Porsche Design will offer them in black shells as well for a bold presence. The two Italian marques came to a common consensus of getting rid of the visible hardware like rivets, corner joints, or any other elements crucial to structural integrity. The result is slapped-on exterior panels that stabilize the frame and look attractive compared to any other luxury suitcase. The horizontal lines on the back and the front remind one of the classic sports car’s flowing, curvilinear magnetism. The uniqueness of the design comes in as the luggage ages with a distinct patina over time.

On closer look, the other Targa elements come to light like the silent 360-degree rotating ball-bearing wheels that emulate the wheel rims of the original, or the bespoke finishing mirrored in the hand-stitched leather handles, having comfortable padding. The TSA preset lock code is 911 if you already didn’t already guessed, and the opening/closing mechanism sounds more or less like the distinctive thud of the classic Targa’s doors. On the inside, the suitcases have a hexagon-print polyester lining to carry the design cues. On the right is a spacious compartment that secures your apparel. This section has a zipped divider with integrated pockets to keep essentials. On the left side is the open compartment that comes with a packing plate for your freshly ironed clothes.

To take care of the dirty clothes at the end of the trip (keeping them separate from the washed ones), there is a foldable bag. The Porsche Design Roadster Aluminum collection in silver color is coming on 15 May, followed by all- black colorway in July. Depending on the luggage capacity you choose, they carry a starting price of $1,650, going all the way up to $1,950.
