“A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Pig” director Michael Sarnoski is reportedly set to write and direct the live-action feature film adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s genre-defying 2019 video game “Death Stranding” at A24, Square Peg and Kojima Productions. In addition, Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen have come onboard as producers.
The game is set in a world after the eponymous cataclysmic event which led to destructive and nightmarish supernatural creatures roaming the Earth and society left devastated and on the brink of collapse.
Players take on the role of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network.
Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Lindsay Wagner, and filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro all lent their voices and likenesses to the game while Elle Fanning, Luca Marinelli and “Mad Max” helmer George Miller are joining the upcoming sequel game’s cast.
As previously reported, the story will be set within the same universe as the game and will introduce new elements and characters, and could possibly go more into the origins of how the world became devastated.
Kojima and Alex Lebovici will also produce the project. The original game has been played by over sixteen million players worldwide since its 2019 launch as a PlayStation exclusive (and PC launch in 2022). The second game releases in June.
Sarnoski most recently directed the Hugh Jackman-led “Death of Robin Hood” at A24, that project hasn’t set a release date as yet.
