Christopher Nolan’s currently in production mega-budget Greek mythological epic “The Odyssey” has set an IMAX record – it will be the first commercial feature film to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras.
Nolan has been using IMAX filming tech since “The Dark Knight” in 2008, often for key action sequences. “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Dunkirk,” “Interstellar,” “Tenet” and “Oppenheimer” all used the tech as well – some more extensively than others.
However, shooting an entire feature film was considered impossible due to the cameras being so big, loud and difficult to use in certain circumstances – especially in quieter and more intimate scenes. Before now, “Dunkirk” is thought to have had the highest percentage of IMAX-shot footage for its runtime – around 70%.
Speaking at the company’s annual press lunch in Cannes on Thursday, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond says Nolan now can finally film it all in the very large screen format with “The Odyssey”:
“Chris called me up and said If you can figure out how to solve the problems, will make [Odyssey] 100% in IMAX. And that’s what we’re doing. He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras.”
The result is the new cameras are reportedly 30% quieter and substantially lighter. New film scanning and processing techniques allow for faster turnaround for dailies.
IMAX has multiple titles of note lately with “Sinners” shooting scenes in IMAX cameras along with “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” and “F1”.
Gelfond also confirmed that Greta Gerwig’s new “Narnia” film will get an exclusive 28-day theatrical run only in IMAX theaters.
“The Odyssey” opens in cinemas on July 17th next year.
