Filmmaker Kitao Sakurai has been set to direct the new “Street Fighter” film at Legendary Entertainment and Capcom.
Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou (“Talk to Me”), aka RackaRacka, exited the project in June last year due to scheduling conflicts after being attached for over a year.
Sakurai is best known for writing, directing and executive producing “The Eric Andre Show”. He recently reteamed with Andre for the comedy feature “Bad Trip” which he co-wrote and directed.
Sakurai also serves as an executive producer of the second season of “Beef” and directed several episodes of Peacock’s “Twisted Metal”.
Here he’ll be working closely with Capcom who is said to be “deeply involved” in the project and is co-producing with Legendary.
The franchise began life as a 1987 arcade game but really took off in 1991 with the release of “Street Fighter II” which became a pop culture event. Multiple game sequels followed with “Street Fighter VI” the most recent release in 2023.
The property was previously adapted both as the infamous 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen, and the 2009 “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” with Kristin Kreuk.
The new “Street Fighter” is targeting a March 20th 2026 release date.
