New MonsterVerse Comic Book Series ‘Return to Skull Island’ Continues the Animated Show

Led by Godzilla and King Kong, the MonsterVerse has expanded to include movies, TV shows, games and comics, and Variety reveals that another new comic book series is on the way.

From Titan Comics and Legendary Comics, it’s titled Return to Skull Island and set in 1993, the same year the events of the Netflix animated series “Skull Island” take place in.

In fact, the comic book series is an official continuation of the animated show.

Variety details that the upcoming series “follows a group of survivors stranded on the perilous South Pacific island. As they uncover its dark secrets, they face life-threatening challenges and fight for survival in a land where every creature is a threat — including King Kong himself.”

Releasing its first issue on June 4, the series is written by Simon Furman (“Transformers”) and illustrated by Christopher Jones (“Doctor Who: Once Upon a Time Lord”).

“Skull Island’s shadows hide untold stories, fierce battles, and creatures unlike anything seen before. Marrying brilliant illustrations and epic storytelling, we see a new side to Kong and his kingdom. We can’t wait to share more this June,” said Titan Comics editor Louis Yamani.

“Partnering with Titan Comics on Return to Skull Island allows us to expand the Monsterverse in exciting new ways. Bringing Skull Island from TV to comics lets us dive deeper into its mysteries, offering fans thrilling new adventures,” adds Legendary’s Robert Napton.
