Netflix Continues to Expand to Video Podcasts and Creator Content

Netflix is already the biggest streaming service in the world, with over 300 million users, but it's trying to capture an even bigger market share by moving into the video podcast and creator space. It's widely known that Netflix does not consider other streamers its competition as it tries to grow as a company. Instead, it's looking at services like YouTube and Google to see where it can find ways to expand what it does. Netflix has introduced games in the past, and will be continuing to find space there. But on the first quarter earnings call Thursday, co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the company is “constantly looking at all different types of content and content creators.”Sarandos went on to say, “As the popularity of video podcasts grow, I suspect you’ll see some of them find their way to Netflix.”We've seen Netflix delve into creator spaces with shows like Kill Tony and Ms. Rachel. Sarandos knows the best pathway forward is to follow what the fans want and try to get their hands on original versions or acquire popular titles that become available. “You know, the question that’s out there is, is it premium? Well, some of it is, and we believe we have the best monetization model on the planet for premium storytelling,” Sarandos said. “I think we could help those creators reach an audience. Our model can also support more ambitious efforts for them, could help derisk them, unlike the kind of typical [user-generated content] models.”Sarandos continued, “We’re looking for the next generation of great creators, and we’re looking everywhere. So they’re not just in film schools, and certainly not just in Hollywood. Creators today have tools that were unimaginable a decade ago, you know, to tell stories, to reach audiences.” This opens up a whole new world on the Netflix app, and a lot more opportunities for creators, who really were choosing between TikTok and YouTube to post their content beforehand. Will Netflix have an open forum for posting? Probably not, but you really can't say absolutely no, because we've seen the company's willingness to try anything to continue to become huge. Let me know what you think in the comments.
