Following today’s five-and-a-half-hour slow reveal livestream of 26 names joining the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday” alongside Robert Downey Jr., it turns out that was only part of it.
In a posting after the release, Robert Downey Jr. said on social media: “That’s what u call a deep bench of talent…actually it’s more like a row, but an extra long one… That must be it… right?”
Marvel Studios’ official account then replied “there’s always room for more”. That matches a THR report saying that Marvel isn’t done with revealing the entire cast but it’s not clear if or when another unveiling will occur.
Production on the film has begun but it’s expected a lot of the shooting will be on interior sets and so the studio will be able to keep things somewhat secret.
Certainly a lot of names of existing MCU actors and characters were notably absent from the line-up, the most obvious being Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Pratt, Mark Ruffalo, Ryan Reynolds, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany, Benedict Wong, Charlie Cox and Hayley Atwell.
Both Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen have previously indicated they’re not involved – both their characters having been killed off on screen in past MCU films.
Some of the old “X-Men” film cast was there, but others were obvious absences including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin and Shawn Ashmore. Similarly the lack of any cast from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films or the “Eternals” movie have raised questions.
A lot of discussion also centered around the inclusion of Tenoch Huerta Mejía’s Submariner, his return a surprise. The actor was accused of sexual misconduct in June 2023, claims he denied and no judicial complaints have been made against him. He has maintained his innocence and has publicly spoken about the impact the claims have had on his mental health.
Filming on the production is expected to run through the next few months into late Summer with post-production then continuing through to the film’s release on May 1st 2026.
