‘Moana 2’ Draws 27.3 Million Views in First 5 Days on Disney+

After setting a box office record with the best Thanksgiving opening weekend of all time, Disney’s “Moana 2” is making waves on Disney+, logging 27.3 million views in its first five days on the streaming service.

That ranks as the third-highest launch ever for a theatrical film on Disney+, and is the best launch for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title since “Encanto,” which premiered on the service in December 2021 after a 30-day theatrical run.

“Moana 2” stands as the third-highest grossing film in WDAS history behind only the two “Frozen” films,” grossing $1.05 billion at the global box office. By comparison, the first “Moana” grossed $643.3 million in 2016.

Disney+ played a major role in the box office surge for “Moana 2.” Since the service’s launch in 2019, “Moana” has become one of the most popular titles streamed on the service, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Disney reports that “Moana” has accrued 1.4 billion viewing hours on Disney+ to date, the equivalent of seeing the film 735 million times.

With years and years of growing popularity for “Moana” on streaming, Bob Iger announced in an earnings call in early 2024 that a planned Disney+ series was being repurposed into a theatrical sequel.

Capitalizing on the hype, “Moana 2” was an instant must-see for families around the world, particularly in the U.S., where it grossed $225.4 million over the 5-day Thanksgiving weekend. That shattered the previous record for the holiday set by “Frozen II” by a full $100 million.

And more “Moana” is on the way, as a live-action remake of the first film starring Dwayne Johnson is on the way, set to hit theaters in July 2026.
