MJ Lenderman & This Is Lorelei made their collab live debut at awesome joint Brooklyn show

MJ Lenderman and This Is Lorelei was a dream bill for MJ Lenderman himself, and for us too. Making it even better, they collabed live for the first time.

MJ Lenderman & This Is Lorelei made their collab live debut at awesome joint Brooklyn show

MJ Lenderman & the Wind and This Is Lorelei played Brooklyn Steel together on Tuesday night (4/29)–the second night of Lenderman’s sold-out, three-night run at the venue–and the moment that a lot of us were waiting for came during Lenderman’s encore, when he brought out Nate Amos from This Is Lorelei for “Dancing in the Club.” Lenderman had been covering the song on tour for a while, then he and Nate teamed up for a collaborative version for the new deluxe edition of This Is Lorelei’s 2024 album Box for Buddy, Box for Star, and as Lenderman said on stage, last night was the first time they ever performed it in public together. He also mentioned it was the first time The Wind ever performed a song that had already been performed that night–This Is Lorelei played their own version during their set, and after that might’ve led you to wonder if they wouldn’t eventually play it together, Lenderman kept dropping hints throughout his own set that something was stirring. He shouted out his love for This Is Lorelei twice during his set, and called them “my favorite band right now.”

It’s easy to see why MJ Lenderman is so enamored with them. Both This Is Lorelei and MJ Lenderman’s latest albums were very high on our favorite albums of 2024 list, and this double bill was as much a dream come true for us as MJ said it was for him. This Is Lorelei–which is Nate’s solo project but a four-piece band with members of fantasy of a broken heart and Dirt Buyer at live shows–put on a great opening set and the band has only gotten tighter since we saw them headlining NYC’s Night Club 101 back in January. Their set was Box for Buddy, Box for Star front to back, and it felt like all hits, as much of the singing-along early crowd would probably agree.

By the time Lenderman and his five-piece backing band The Wind took the stage, the crowd had packed in like sardines and the singalongs only got louder, as he ran through a 20-song set that included all of last year’s Manning Fireworks and lots of other highlights. He opened on a calm note, with Manning Fireworks‘ album-opening title track, and right away, The Wind proved to be as gripping during the quiet moments as they were during bangers like “She’s Leaving You,” “Wristwatch,” “Knockin’,” and an especially rippin’ rendition of “SUV” from 2022’s Boat Songs. As immortalized on The Wind’s 2023 live album Live and Loose!, there’s a jam band quality to Lenderman & company (it’s fitting that the show livestreamed on Nugs), and they had the crowd in a daze as they stretched out songs, creatively segued between songs, and really brought the music to life and made the show an entirely different beast than the studio albums.

Night one of MJ Lenderman’s run had support from Joanna Sternberg, and MJ brought out NYC democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Kwame Mamdani to speak during the show. The run wraps up tonight (4/30) with support from Nap Eyes.
