Greg Freeman announces new album ‘Burnover,’ shares “Point and Shoot”

One of the most promising newer voices within the current indie-country boom is Vermont singer/songwriter Greg Freeman, who released his debut album I Looked Out in 2022 on the DIY label Bud Tapes, and then steadily rose and eventually signed to Transgressive/Canvasback, who re-released the album earlier this year. Now, he has announced his sophomore LP, Burnover, and it already seems poised to be an even bigger breakthrough. It arrives on August 22 (pre-order).

In a new Stereogum feature by Danielle Chelosky, Greg says the title Burnover comes from Western and Central New York’s burned-over district, where “there was a lot of crazy spiritualism and New Age religion and weird Christian shit going on in the 1800s.” The first single is opening track “Point and Shoot,” which comes with a black-and-white, vintage-film-inspired music video (directed by Asher Groh) that stars Greg as The Gambler and his frequent collaborator Merce Lemon as his wife, The Cheat. Merce also plays on the album, and other contributors include Lily Seabird, Benny Yurco (who also produced it), Scott Maynard, Cam Gilmour, Ben Rodgers, Zack James, Sam Atallah, and more. According to Stereogum, the album is fleshed out with pedal steel, wurlitzer, tambourine, trumpet, organ, and more.

I Looked Out gained Freeman a handful of comparisons to Jason Molina, as well as contemporary Molina acolyte MJ Lenderman, and “Point and Shoot” is a propulsive song that feels like the same kind of jump from I Looked Out that Lenderman made between Boat Songs and Manning Fireworks. It’s a great track and you can check it out below.

Greg also has tour dates coming up with Hamilton Leithauser in May, and after that he’ll open for This Is Lorelei in NYC at Ruins at Knockdown Center on July 19. That bill also includes Dirt Buyer and FearDorian, and tickets go on BrooklynVegan presale today (4/23) at 10 AM. PASSWORD = BKVEGAN. All dates are listed below.
