SHERELLE has surprise-released her debut studio album ‘With A Vengeance’ – you can listen to it in full below.
The London electronic producer and DJ dropped the anticipated record unnannouned today (April 9) via Method 808. It comes ahead of her biggest headline show to date this Friday (11) at London’s Roundhouse.
‘With A Vengeance’ spans 10 tracks, including lead single ‘Freaky (Just My Type)’ – a Juke-meets-Detroit Ghetto House collaboration featuring London R&B artist George Riley.
“When I first made the ‘Freaky’ instrumental, I was extremely confused but knew there was something different about this song,” SHERELLE explained in a statement.
“I’m super grateful to George as once I played it to her, she gave me the belief that the instrumental was strong enough to make a banger. It took her 15 minutes to change my mind about the track. I’ve never had so much fun in a session before!”
She continued: “We only had an hour with each other but it’s turned into a beautiful lifelong memory between friends and we now have a beautiful song out of it. Forever grateful for her support throughout making it and adding the much-needed touch to this song.”
Recalling the experience of working on the single, Riley said: “Always love getting in the studio with SHERELLE to have a little cackle and a catch up.
“This particular day, we’d finally started working but nothing was really sticking. We had about 10 minutes to go and SHERELLE played me the instrumental for what would become ‘FREAKY’.”
She added: “It was already such a vibe and almost like magic, the bisexual anthem was born. We were pleased. We closed our laptops and gave thanks for a good day at the office.”
Created throughout 2024 between London and Amsterdam, ‘With A Vengeance’ – aka ‘WAV’ – sees SHERELLE making sense of a turbulent and difficult period in her personal life.
Per a press release, the studio provided the artist with a “safe space” where she could “channel anger and feelings of betrayal, her hard and fast club tracks turning darkness into the cerebral joy of overcoming adversity”.
It was inspired by the likes of Kode9, Scratcha DVA, Machinedrum, Lone and SBTRKT, as well as grime’s R&G subgenre. The record was made “for the dancefloor”, and contains elements of London, New York, Detroit and Chicago.
Other track titles include ‘Enter The Void’, ‘XTC’, ‘Ready, Steady, Go!’ and ‘Thru The Night’.
“I’m super happy to have finally reached the point of releasing this album,” SHERELLE commented. “It feels quite strange to have it out in the world, I’ve been thinking about it for so long.
“It’s great to overcome lots of negative thoughts and energy, and transform it into something cathartic and positive. Behind the scenes, I’ve had a tough few years but finally feel like I’m in a good place mentally and personally thanks to this album and all the lovely people around me.”
She concluded: “‘WAV ‘has been my soundboard of last year and I hope that people can feel the raw energy that comes from this album.”
You can listen to SHERELLE’s ‘With A Vengeance’ in full above on Spotify, or via your preferred streaming platform/online store here. It follows her 2024 single ‘Meet Me At The Temple’ featuring CLIPZ.
Ticket prices for the producer/DJ’s show at London’s Roundhouse are capped at just £10 each (buy yours here). The idea came out of “frustration of the cost of living crisis and expensive ticket prices”, and hopes to make Jungle, Breaks and Footwork more accessible for fans.
Speaking to NME in 2021, SHERELLE said that “the government has failed the music scene in a massive way”. She also reflected on how learning to make music had helped her deal with the anxiety of having an “unviable” career during lockdown.
This summer, SHERELLE will play a B2B DJ set with CLIPZ at Chase & Status’ All Points East 2025 show in London.
