Universal’s streaming service Peacock has officially canceled two original comedy series – the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy “Based on a True Story” and the mockumentary “Mr. Throwback” featuring NBA star Stephen Curry.
Created by Craig Rosenberg, “Based on a True Story” followed a married couple who become entangled in the true crime podcasting world and suspect their plumber is in fact a serial killer.
Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana co-starred in the series. Reviews were good when the show launched in June 2023 and despite a strong fanbase, the streamer opted to cancel – five months after the second season was released.
“Mr. Throwback” premiered in August last year, and followed Danny Grossman (Adam Pally), a former basketball prodigy turned down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer.
He seeks redemption by looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate – Steph Curry. Also starring were Ego Nwodim, Ayden Mayeri, Tracy Letts, Layla Scalisi, Tien Tran, and Rich Sommer.
Reviews were mixed and the streamer has now left it as a one and done. Peacock does not release viewership information with any regularity so it’s not clear how successful or not these series were with viewers.
