Gillian Anderson & Hannah Einbinder to Star in ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’

“X-Files” icon Gillian Anderson and “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder are set to star in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, a “sleepover classic” horror movie from I Saw the TV Glow filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun, per THR.

Streamer and distributor Mubi, behind last year’s The Substance, will finance and distribute.

The film’s plot, revealed earlier this year by the New Yorker, follows “a queer filmmaker hired to direct a new installment of a long-running slasher franchise. The director fixates on the prospect of casting the ‘final girl ‘from the original movie, and the two women descend into a frenzy of psychosexual mania.”

“I make movies I wish existed when I was a kid,“ said Schoenbrun. “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is my best attempt at the ‘sleepover classic’: an insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store. I couldn’t be more excited to be heading to sleepaway camp this summer with the mad comic genius Hannah Einbinder, the legendary Gillian Anderson, and the daring folks at Mubi and Plan B, who by greenlighting this movie have summoned a plague-like flood of blood, guts, and various other fluids to rain down on us all.”

Plan B is Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner’s film and TV production company. Executive producer Daniel Bekerman from Scythia Films will provide local production services.

The filmmaker had previously described the film as “Portrait of a Lady on Fire set in a Friday the 13th sequel. “

That premise alone sounds like an exciting and subversive approach to the slasher that’s also in line with the themes explored in Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow and We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. The lead cast only furthers anticipation for Schoenbrun’s latest.
