There’s a new murderous clown up on the big screen plus an acclaimed Shudder release now streaming at home, and that’s just the beginning of this week’s seven fresh horror offerings.

Here’s all the new horror that released on Friday, May 9, 2025.

Eli Craig directed Clown in a Cornfield

The young adult slasher novel by author Adam Cesare comes to the big screen in Clown in a Cornfield, and RLJE Films and Shudder have released the film in theaters today.

Eli Craig (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil) directed the movie adaptation.

Katie Douglas (Ginny & Georgia), Carson MacCormac (Shazam!), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal), Will Sasso (The Three Stooges), and Kevin Durand (Abigail) lead the cast.

In the bloody slasher movie, “Quinn and her father have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down.

“As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play.”

The Clown in a Cornfield movie is said to be a “harrowing, savage, heart-pounding adaptation,” with director Eli Craig recently promising “an insanely fun, action, horror, comedy.”

Carter Blanchard and Eli Craig adapted the first novel in Adam Cesare’s trilogy. The most recent book, The Church of Frendo, released last year, with a fourth on the way.

After arriving in theaters earlier this month from IFC Films and Shudder, Norwegian body horror movie The Ugly Stepsister is now available at home. A twisted take on the tale of Cinderella, writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt’s acclaimed movie is now streaming on Shudder.

Shudder previews, “A biting satire and cinematically exhilarating directorial debut, The Ugly Stepsister is a timely examination of body image and beauty standards, identifying Emilie Blichfeldt as one of the most exciting new international filmmaking voices.”

The Ugly Stepsister follows Elvira (Lea Myren) as she prepares to earn the prince’s affection at any cost. In a kingdom where beauty is a brutal business, Elvira will compete with the beautiful and enchanting Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Næss) to become the belle of the ball.

The Ugly Stepsister marks the feature debut from Norwegian writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt, and stars Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Næss alongside Ane Dahl Torp.

As Meagan explains in her review, “Blichfeldt employs historically accurate medical procedures to great stomach-churning effect, delivering graphic body horror by way of unflinching surgeries and self-harm, all in the name of love. The filmmaker refuses to let her audience look away; each moment of Elvira’s ruthless metamorphosis from an awkward, ugly duckling into a poised stunner is drawn out to an unbearable degree and frequently shot in extreme closeups. Beauty is pain, and The Ugly Stepsister wants you to feel it on a visceral level.”

“It’s elegant, stylish, and gnarly,” Meagan adds in her 4-star review.

The feature debut of director Kourtney Roy, horror movie Kryptic premiered at SXSW last year, and Well Go USA brought the film home to Digital outlets beginning today, May 9.

“Kay is in trouble. A strange encounter in the woods has left her with no memory. Only one thing is certain: she is the spitting image of missing monster hunter, Barb Valentine.

“When an intruder breaks into her house, she runs, with no idea where she’s going; but she knows her only chance to reconnect is to shed more light onto Barb’s mysterious disappearance. Random encounters seem to point her in the right direction, but what was hoped to be a journey of self-discovery gradually becomes a hunt for the monster itself.”

Chloe Pirrie, Jeff Gladstone, Jason Deline, Ali Rusu-Tahir, Kamantha Naidoo, Jenna Hill, Pam Kearns, Jane Stanton, Sara J. Southey, Jennifer Copping, Moses Wamukoya, Sarah Hayward, Patti Allan, Christina Lewall, and Ardy Ramezani star.

Paul Bromley wrote the screenplay for Kryptic.

The Moogai Sundance Review

The Babadook and Talk to Me producers Causeway Films have birthed a new Australian horror film with The Moogai, now playing in limited theaters and also available on VOD.

Sarah and Fergus, a hopeful young Aboriginal couple, give birth to their second baby. But what should be a joyous time of their lives becomes sinister when Sarah starts seeing a malevolent spirit she is convinced is trying to take her baby.

Fergus, who can’t see it but desperately wants to believe her, grows increasingly worried as she becomes more unbalanced. Is the child-stealing spirit real or is she in fact the biggest threat to the safety of their family?

Writer-director Jon Bell makes his feature debut on the film. Shari Sebbens, Meyne Wyatt, Tessa Rose, Clarence Ryan, Toby Leonard Moore, and Bella Heathcote star.

Sew Torn

Director Freddy Macdonald makes his feature debut with the darkly comedic thriller Sew Torn, which has opened in limited theatrical release from Vertigo Releasing today.

In the film, “Barbara Duggen (Eve Connolly), a mobile seamstress, gets tangled in her own thread after stealing a briefcase from a drug deal gone bad. In an escalating game of cat and mouse, her different choices lead to drastically different outcomes along the way.”

Calum Worthy (“The Act”), K Callan (Knives Out, “Poker Face”), Caroline Goodall (Schindler’s List, White Squall) and John Lynch (The Watchers, “The Terror”) also star.

Meagan Navarro writes in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “There’s a dizzying display of innovation and style on display in Macdonald’s funny, violent, and genre-influenced cozy crime caper.”

A sci-fi adventure movie that’s said to be “Spielbergian,” Swedish film Watch the Skies has made headlines for using AI to dub the film in English, and it’s now playing in select theaters.

The film has opened in over 100 AMC Theatres across the top 20 markets in the US, released by XYZ Films. Check your local listings to find a screening location near you.

Watch the Skies is the world’s first theatrical full-length feature to use AI for immersive dubbing, making the characters appear to be speaking English, even though the original film was shot in Swedish. This pioneering approach made by AI company Flawless seamlessly integrates the voices of the dubbing actors into the film, ensuring perfect lip sync and eliminating the need for subtitles. The film is dubbed by the original Swedish cast speaking English.

Watch the Skies follows a rebellious teenager who believes her missing father was abducted by aliens. Joining forces with a quirky UFO club of endearing misfits, she embarks on a high-stakes adventure that defies the law and challenges the very fabric of reality.

And finally this week, inspired by the true story of Sweden’s first woman to be killed for witchcraft, Feed is now available on VOD outlets beginning today from Freestyle Digital Media.

The Swedish-language horror film is directed by Johannes Persson.

When a murder turns into a myth and becomes a popular tourist attraction, influencers soon try to ride the wave of “ghost tourism” to market various tourist destinations for clients, blurring the line between history, horror, and commerce.

A young medical student joins her influencer boyfriend on one of his marketing jobs after being hired to help an old family business to thrive, but they soon find themselves stuck on a tiny island in a lake in which an ancient Swedish witch is said to live. The goal is to make potential tourists believe that old witch, Märit, lives in the lake around a commercial campsite  but there’s soon reason to believe that Märit is more than just a made-up ghost story.

Molly Nutley, Joel Lützow, Sofia Kappel, Amanda Lindh, Emelina Rosenstielke, and Vincent Grahl star. The film is written by Paolo Vacirca and Henry Stenberg.
