Ben Affleck Opens Up About What He Really Hated About Playing Batman
For a lot fans, wearing the Batsuit would be a dream come true, but for Ben Affleck, it was more like a nightmare wrapped in neoprene. While Affleck’s tenure as the Dark Knight spanned multiple films and plenty of headlines, the actor has now revealed the one part of being Batman he genuinely couldn’t stand… the Batsuit. In a recent GQ interview, Affleck opened about his time in the cowl, a role he first took on in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and continued in Justice League, Suicide Squad, The Flash, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Despite enjoying elements of the experience, particularly the more mature, weary version of Bruce Wayne introduced in Batman v Superman , there was one thing that never sat right with him.“I hated the Batsuits,” Affleck said bluntly. “The Batsuits are horrendous to wear, they’re incredibly hot, they don’t breathe, they’re made to look the way they want them to look. “There’s no thought put into the human being [inside of it], so what happens is you just start sweating. I sweat, I get hot, in that thing, you just start pouring water because it’s got the cowl over it."“It’s one thing to wear the suit, once you cover your head, I guess that’s where all your heat escapes and you feel it. Even the most highly trained, much more fit stunt guys, they could do that for about 45, 50 minutes, and then they’re going to get heat stroke. “That was really the thing — it made it difficult to make the movie because it was so hot. It also doesn’t make you feel very heroic, because you’re instantly exhausted and really sweaty and trying to hide the sweat pouring down your face. “Maybe Christian [Bale] or [Robert Pattinson] were just better at dealing with it, but I found it to be the least fun part of it.”For anyone who grew up dreaming about becoming Batman, this is the kind of a reality check. Affleck’s comments cut through the glamor that we associate with the cape and cowl, especially when you consider that even stunt pros were tapping out under the heat. It’s not the first time he’s joked about the less-than-convenient side of the suit as Christian Bale once advised him to demand a zipper for bathroom breaks, but this interview really drives home just how brutal it was physically. While Affleck’s time in the DC Universe is over, another actor will be stepping into the role and he better be prepared for some physical torture.
