Horror master Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, The Last Circus) and Carolina Bang’s Pokeepsie Films (“30 Coins“) production company are joining forces with Atresmedia TV to adapt Sanctuary, a dystopian sci-fi podcast series, Variety reports today.

The eight-episode thriller series is directed by “30 Coins” directors Ruiz-Gallardón and Zoe Berriatúa.

In the dystopian thriller, “After a climate disaster, pregnant women live in the Sanctuary, a dome that protects them from pollution. Far from their families and society, they are cared for and at peace. Or so they believe. Pilar’s arrival will reveal the truth.”

Lucía Guerrero stars as Pilar, and Aura Garrido stars opposite as Valle, the engineer tasked with looking after the women.

Alba Ribas, Songa Park, Anna Canepa, Jaime Ordoñez, Melida Molina, Joan Sentís, Borja Luna, Manu Fullola, Juan Viadas, Blanca Velletbó, Melina Matthews, and Godeliv Van Den Brandt round out the cast.

The podcast series was created by Manuel Bartual and Carmen Pacheco. Pacheco told Variety, “I think our series is just one of many dystopias that have sounded the alarm about the catastrophic direction society was heading in. The problem is that these stories have often been consumed unconsciously, almost romanticizing post-apocalyptic scenarios. I think it’s time to stop watching dystopian sci-fi and thinking, ‘Wow, how scary, this could happen if we keep going this way,’ and start saying, ‘Okay, what do we need to do right now to make sure this never happens?'”

Montse García serves as executive producer alongside Rodrigo Ruiz-Gallardón, with Bang and de la Iglesia on board as producers.

As for Iglesia’s other high-profile series, “30 Coins”, which last left off in 2023 with a wild season two finale, the filmmaker maintains his vow to see it to completion despite HBO not moving forward with season three. Iglesia took to X last year with this disappointing update, “30 Coins is not being renewed. The episodes of the final season have already been written. The story was conceived from the beginning as a trilogy. 30 Monedas is part of my life. I’m going to do everything possible to finish it.”

In the meantime, Sanctuary will be featured at the upcoming Berlinale Series Market Selects, so stay tuned.
