Pulp announce 1st album in 24 years, share “Spike Island”

It’s official: after various hints over the last six months, Pulp have announced their first album in 24 years! (The last was 2001’s We Love Life that was produced by Scott Walker). It’s titled More and will be out June 6 via Rough Trade. Preorder the album on Dark Green vinyl and Blue Sky Thinking vinyl in the BV shop.

For “more” on the album, here’s Jarvis Cocker on how it happened: “Well: when we started touring again in 2023 we practiced a new song called ‘Hymn of the North’ during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Hammersmith Odeon. This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024. A couple are revivals of ideas from last century. The music for one song was written by Richard Hawley. The music for another was written by Jason Buckle. The Eno family sing backing vocals on a song. There are string arrangements written by Richard Jones & played by the Elysian Collective.”

More was made with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Beth Gibbons) over just three weeks in London last fall. “This is the shortest amount of time a Pulp album has ever taken to record,” Jarvis notes. “It was obviously ready to happen.”

Jarvis adds, “It was written & performed by four human beings from the North of England, aided & abetted by five other human beings from various locations in the British Isles. No A.I. was involved during the process. This album is dedicated to Steve Mackey. This is the best that we can do. Thanks for listening.”

The first single from the album is “Spike Island” which is about an infamous Stone Roses show. Watch the video, which was directed by Jarvis and plays off the photos from their 1995 masterpiece Different Class, below.

Most of the songs from More were played on Pulp’s 2024 North American tour. Check out the album artwork and tracklist below.

Pulp will be on tour starting in June, and have two shows with LCD Soundsystem in September at Hollywood Bowl.
