PACIFIC RIM Live-Action Prequel Series in Development at Amazon with Eric Heisserer Writing

Looks like the Kaiju and Jaegers are gearing up for a comeback, and this time, they’re stomping their way onto Prime Video.Variety has confirmed that a Pacific Rim live-action TV series is officially in development at Amazon. The project comes from Legendary Television in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, with Arrival and Shadow and Bone scribe Eric Heisserer on board as writer and executive producer. While specific story details are under wraps, sources say the series will serve as a prequel to the original films. There’s also still potential for new movies down the road, meaning the Pacific Rim universe could be expanding on multiple fronts. This is exciting news for fans of the franchise. Guillermo del Toro’s original 2013 film was a visually bonkers love letter to kaiju and mecha cinema, where humanity built towering battle robots called Jaegers to punch back against massive monsters emerging from an interdimensional rift in the Pacific Ocean. That movie was a blast! It spawned a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising in 2018, as well as an anime spinoff (Pacific Rim: The Black), which ran for two seasons on Netflix from 2021–2022. Then you’ve got the comics, novels, toys, and more.Heisserer brings some serious sci-fi credentials to the table. On top of his Netflix work with Shadow and Bone, he earned an Oscar nomination for Arrival, and penned genre favorites like Bird Box, Lights Out, Bloodshot, and Hours, which he also directed. He even took a stab at Freddy Krueger with the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, which was a big dud. The Pacific Rim news is part of a larger wave of genre programming from Legendary and Amazon MGM. In the past few weeks, they also announced a series based on G.T. Karber’s Murdle murder mystery puzzles, and continue to build out properties like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters on Apple TV+, Dune: Prophecy at Max, and The Legend of Lara Croft at Netflix. No release date has been announced yet, but if you’ve missed watching Jaegers charging into battle against Kaiju, a new story is coming, and it could be awesome!
