‘Night’ Moves: Bruce Springsteen Surprises At Patti Smith Tribute
Proceeds from the concert, which was produced by City Winery, will benefit music education for underserved youth.

A last-minute addition to the lineup for the Patti Smith tribute show People Have the Power last night (March 26) at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Bruce Springsteen rocked out on “Because the Night” as part of a 29-song extravaganza also featuring R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, the National’s Matt Berninger, Scarlett Johansson and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O.
Springsteen famously gave Smith and her band “Because the Night” for their 1978 album Easter after leaving it off his own contemporaneous album, Darkness on the Edge of Town. It went on to become Smith’s biggest mainstream hit, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Springsteen and the E Street Band still perform it live to this day.

Last night’s event included performances by Courtney Barnett (“Redondo Beach”), Sharon Van Etten (“Pissing in a River”), Ben Harper (“Ghost Dance”), the Kills Alison Mosshart and Johnny Depp (“Dancing Barefoot”), Glen Hansard (“Beneath the Southern Cross”) and Angel Olsen (“Easter”). Sean Penn, Jim Jarmusch and Johansson all read Smith’s poetry.
Proceeds from the concert, which was produced by City Winery, will benefit music education for underserved youth. The house band was led by Smith’s longtime bassist Tony Shanahan, who was joined by Flea, guitarist Charlie Sexton, Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench and drummer Steve Jordan.
