Tortoise Tease First New Album In Nine Years With ‘Oganesson’

Experimental music veterans Tortoise are teasing their first new album since 2016’s The Catastrophist with the single “Oganesson,” which is out now.

The gently chugging song includes Jeff Parker on guitar, Dan Bitney on synths, Doug McCombs on bass, John Herndon on acoustic and electronic percussion and John McEntire on drums. It was recorded by McEntire at studios in Los Angeles, Chicago and Portland, Or., and mixed at his own Soma Electronic Music Studios in Gladstone, Or.

The as-yet-untitled full-length is expected later this year as the first release in a new partnership with International Anthem and Nonesuch Records. Tortoise have previously been affiliated with Chicago’s Thrill Jockey Records since the mid-1990s.

Tortoise are expected to feature “Oganesson” and other new music during their performance tonight (March 27) at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tn.
