Kristin Davis recalled a “sweet but significant” moment in Season 1 of HBO’s “Sex and the City” in which her character, Charlotte, told the man she was dating she was not into blowjobs.
“The idea of choosing not to do something just because men expect it is kind of revolutionary,” the actress said Monday on her rewatch podcast, “Are You a Charlotte?”
In the episode, a conflicted Charlotte talks to BFFs Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) to learn how they feel about giving and receiving oral sex. Carrie assures Charlotte she does not have to do anything she is not comfortable with.
She also told guest Oliver Hudson that the show’s creators, Darren Star and Michael Patrick King, asked for the actresses’ own attitudes on the matter.
“Darren and Michael Patrick approached each of us separately and asked, ‘How do you feel about blowjobs? We’re trying to write this, but we realized that we’re gay men and you guys are straight women. Can you share with us your thoughts?’” Davis recalled.
She continued, “I guess we all had different takes,” adding she had only one objection in real life: “I don’t like someone pushing my head down, because definitely who likes that? Nobody, as far as I know.”
At the time, Davis thought Charlotte’s refusal was “kind of revolutionary” but added, “My thought now would be like, ‘What trauma did Charlotte have?'”
In the series’ reboot, “And Just Like That,” Charlotte is now very into blowjobs and famously was in the middle of giving one to husband Harry (Evan Handler) when their daughter walked in on them (she later explained she was checking him for skin cancer).
Davis said, “It’s fascinating to see that shift and explore these dynamics from a female perspective — something that had not really been portrayed on screen before.”
She further praised the original series for showing “different women want different things, and that’s OK — just as different men want different things.”
