James Gunn and Peter Safran Plan to Release Three DC Films Per Year
DC Heads James Gunn and Peter Safran are kicking off their comic book universe this summer with the introduction of a new Superman. Aside from Creature Commandos, which debuted in December, fans are looking forward to the series Lanterns on Max, the film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will feature Jason Momoa’s Lobo, and projects like Peacemaker, and Clayface. We are ready to see what Gunn has to offer, and in an effort to be more transparent about what fans can expect moving forward, Gunn and Safran told The Wrap their plan about the frequency of the studio’s future projects. Their goal, at least right now, is to release “two live-action films and one animated film per year,” Safran explained. He also mentioned that they want something similar for Max, Warner Bros’ streaming service, where they want to release two live action series and one animated series per year. Gunn also commented on why some Hollywood movies see a drop in quality, stating, “As it’s been my experience working in Hollywood, the worst thing about the quality of Hollywood movies is that so many scripts get greenlit based on a date or based on this is an IP that we want to make, but not doing it properly.”Gunn said of his own method, “We remain steadfast in making sure that each of these projects works as a standalone project, so that you can go see Superman and you can watch Lanterns without having to see both of them,” while also adding that “there’s going to be special things in there for people who have seen both.”Gunn has worked with both Marvel and DC in the past, and has produced fantastic films while watching what each studio has gotten right and wrong. Hopefully this will be a great foundation for Gunn and Safran to build the future of DC’s film universe.
