Five Irish Horror Comedies to Stream This Week

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and SYFY’s celebrating accordingly with a marathon of the Leprechaun movies. But if you’re looking for horror inspiration that’ll bring the laughs and screams beyond the pint-sized killer’s holiday-appropriate franchise, this week’s streaming picks are dedicated to Irish horror comedies that do just that.

If you’re feeling lucky, here’s where you can stream these Irish horror-comedies this week.

Extra Ordinary – Kanopy, Paramount+

Extra Ordinary ghosts

This horror-comedy from writers/directors Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman delivers laughs and ectoplasm in spades. Maeve Higgins stars as the kindly Rose Dooley, a lonely woman with a unique ability to see and deal with ghosts. When a washed up rock star (Will Forte) enters a Satanic pact that entails sacrificing his daughter, Rose must team up with client and crush Martin Martin (Barry Ward) to save her. While this supernatural comedy embraces its ghosts and their goopy residue, the irreverent comedic charms and repressed sexual jokes remain at the forefront. In other words, don’t expect scares in this sitcom-like, cozy little feature.

Grabbers – AMC+, Shudder

Grabbers Irish horror comedy

A small island off the coast of Ireland becomes ground zero to an alien invasion. These tentacled monsters, dubbed Grabbers by the locals, have an affinity for human blood. That’s terrible news for the locals until they discover alcohol is toxic to the spaced invaders. Naturally, they deduce the only way to survive the attack is to get hammered. It’s drunk villagers versus man-eating aliens in this raucously entertaining horror-comedy that doesn’t forget to deliver on its creatures. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actor Richard Coyle stars.

High Spirits – Prime Video

High Spirits

Irish writer/director Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, The Company of Wolves) takes a kitchen sink approach to the hauntings in his silly horror-comedy. Peter O’Toole leads a stacked cast as a dilapidated castle owner that converts it into a haunted bed and breakfast for cash. The only problem is that the castle is genuinely haunted, making for a fun mashup of human and ghostly-created shenanigans to torment guests. Ghostly love quadrangles, eerie nuns, and possessed stage plays offer just some of the hijinks. Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg, Beverly D’Angelo, Liam Neeson, and Jennifer Tilly also star.

Let the Wrong One In – Fandango at Home, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roku Channel

Let the Wrong One In

If the title, riffing off Let the Right One In, isn’t already an indication, this Irish horror comedy centers on vampires. Let the Wrong One In follows young supermarket worker Matt, who is nice to the point of being a bit of a pushover. When he discovers that his older, estranged brother, Deco, has turned into a vampire, he’s faced with a dilemma: risk his life to save Deco or ensure humanity’s survival with a stake to the heart. Writer/Director Conor McMahon loosely bases his horror-comedy on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel for laughs. Look for “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” icon Anthony Head in a supporting role as a vampire hunter.

Stitches – Fandango at Home, Hoopla, Prime Video, SCREAMBOX

Stitches

While performing at a children’s birthday party, Stitches the Clown attempts to entertain but finds himself the subject of ridicule instead. Then, a freak accident claims his life. Six years later, Stitches returns from the grave to exact revenge. This slasher comedy from Conor McMahon emphasizes splatstick gore. Think Evil Dead 2 levels of gory silliness, with inventive kills suitable for a killer clown. We’re talking balloon animals made of intestines and ice cream sundaes concocted out of brains. The only aim of Stitches is to offer a good time with great kills, and it delivers.
