Searchlight has released the first official trailer for the Jay Roach-directed “The Roses,” a reimagining of Danny DeVito’s 1989 divorce-themed pitch black comedy “The War of the Roses”.
Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner starred in the original 1989 film about a wealthy couple – Oliver and Barbara Rose – who have a seemingly perfect marriage. As it begins to fall apart, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle.
That project marked a third teaming of Douglas, Turner and DeVito, who first had success with 1984’s “Romancing the Stone”. ‘Roses’ garnered good reviews and pulled in $160 million worldwide from a $26 million budget.
The new version is penned by “Poor Things” and “The Favorite” writer Tony McNamara who also created Hulu’s “The Great”. The story revolves around Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch), the picture-perfect couple who have successful careers, great kids and an enviable sex life.
But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down. The trailer suggests a lighter tone than the original with the comedy playing a bit more broad.
Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou and Belinda Bromilow co-star in the film which opens September 1st.
