Chris Matthews Says ‘Lie After Lie After Lie’ From Trump, Musk Led to All-Time Low Democratic Approval Rating

“Morning Joe” panelist Chris Matthews blamed “lie after lie after lie” from President Trump and Elon Musk as the key reason as to why Democrats have an all-time low approval rating — a notion co-host Mika Brzezinski agreed with on MSNBC on Monday.

Brzezinski started the segment off by highlighting a few recent polls showing support for the Democratic party has cratered, including one from NBC News that found only 27% of registered voters approve of the party — the lowest percentage dating back to 1990. She also pointed to a new CNN poll that shows only 29% of Americans have a favorable view of the Democratic party, which was a “record low” going back to 1992, Brzezinski noted.

Matthews then weighed in, saying the Democrats are in a bad spot because of what the president and Musk have been saying. He also criticized the Democrats currently in office, saying, “They never questioned the facts” and have let both men spread lies unchecked.

“They let the president lie about Social Security and say that you’re giving benefits to people who are 160 years old or to their grandchildren,” Matthews said. “We allow Elon Musk to go on television and tell everybody that we’re using Social Security as a [means] to bring people into the country illegally. That we’re giving them benefits — which we’re not. [That] we’re giving them to illegal people in the country who came in illegally, we give it to them. Lie after lie after lie, and said nothing.”

Matthews then suggested the Democrats should get a resident “fact checker” and “war room” to push back against the Trump Administration.

“Nobody checks the facts anymore, and the lies are getting through to the American people,” he added.

“They are!” Brzezinski said, jumping in. She then shared that she was at a baseball game recently — she did not say if it was a college or pro game, with the MLB season starting later this month — where she heard people sharing bogus information about government workers fired by DOGE.

Brzezinski agreed with Matthews that there should be some sort of fact-checking operation on the Democratic side to fight “disinformation” coming from the Trump Administration.

Panelist Ezra Klein disagreed with the pair, however, saying that the media is better suited to fact-check President Trump, rather than elected Democrats.

“That’s us, not them. I mean… nobody cares what the Democrats say right now, because Democrats have no power. If anybody’s going to be bringing the facts and have any credibility to do it — what little credibility we have left — it’s us and the media. It’s us in civil society,” Klein said.
