Rashida Jones Has Made Peace With Fans Hating Her on ‘The Office’: ‘I Was the 3rd Point in the Triangle’ | Video

Rashida Jones knows that “The Office” shipped Jim and Pam before “shipping” was even a thing — and she’s made peace with the fact that many of them hated her character for coming in between them.
“I was the third point in the triangle, it’s fine, I accept it,” she said in a Tuesday episode of Amy Poehler’s new podcast, “Good Hang.”
Jones co-starred on “The Office” after being introduced in Season 3 as Karen Filippelli, a new co-worker for Jim (John Krasinski), who at the top of the season had just accepted a job at a different branch of Dunder Mifflin — in part to remove himself from Pam (Jenna Fischer), who was married when they shared a kiss at the end of Season 2. Karen becomes a love interest of Jim, ultimately creating a love triangle that many fans decidedly wanted to be an A-B relationship between Jim and Pam.
“I had done a year on ‘The Office,’ and they let me go. Which made sense, it made sense,” Jones told Poehler of her time working with Greg Daniels and Michael Schur before “Parks and Recreation.”
“You had such a tough job there because everybody wanted Jim and Pam, and then guess who shows up? A very likable, cool — and everyone was like, ‘Oh no wait, I love Karen,’” Poehler argued.
Jones, meanwhile, gently disagreed with the assessment.
“That’s nice. It did not feel that way,” she said. “People did not like me. Like, fans were not about it. But they had to create tension for the relationship to be earned later. So I was the third point in the triangle — it’s fine, I accept it.”
Then, of course, the role of Ann Perkins came along in “Parks and Recreation,” which cast Jones’ real-world friend Poehler as her co-lead, Leslie Knope, and the rest is history.
