Snow White star Rachel Zegler worked with a “social media guru” paid for by Disney after Instagram posts about President Donald Trump, according to reports.
An article by Variety looked into reports of struggles behind the scenes on the production, many of which centred around lead Zegler. The Oscar nominee is outspoken on social media regarding her political point of view, drawing criticism from those who disagree. One post reportedly drove Disney to take action.
Following last year’s Presidential election, the actor took to Instagram to post “Fuck Donald Trump” and “May Trump supporters … and Trump himself never know peace”. The statement drew criticism from conservative commentators, leading Zegler to later apologise.
“I would like to sincerely apologise for the election post I shared on my Instagram last week. I let my emotions get the best of me,” Zegler wrote a week later, also on Instagram. “Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse”.
The report says that the controversy, as well as divisive reactions to her comments about Palestine, led to discussions with the film’s producer Marc Platt. It is said she began working with a “social media guru” paid for by Disney to look over any posts prior to the film’s release. Disney declined to comment on the article, while Zegler did not respond to a request for comment.
These controversies, as well as abusive comments about the Latin actor’s casting, are believed to have led to the film’s disappointing box office opening. It would debut to $42.2million in the US, well below expectations and a disaster considering the film’s estimated $240–270million budget.
The film received a poor response from critics as well, with a “rotten” 42 per cent score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics consensus reading: “Snow White is hardly a grumpy time at the movies thanks to Rachel Zegler’s luminous star turn, but its bashful treatment of the source material along with some dopey stylistic choices won’t make everyone happy, either”.
