PS2 Classic on PS5, PS4 Seemingly Getting a Free Upgrade

It looks like Sony’s upgrading a PS2 classic on the PS5 and PS4 with its new and improved emulator, and the free update should be available soon. An older PS4 version of Kaiju fighting game War of the Monsters is currently available via PS Plus Premium and as a stand-alone purchase on the PS Store.

War of the Monsters PS5, PS4 upgrade should land both on PS Store and PS Plus Premium

A new Taiwanese rating board entry for War of the Monsters PS5 and PS4 versions was spotted by Gematsu. Classics are typically rated again ahead of their newer ports, as was the case with Siren recently.

While War of the Monsters did previously release for the PS4, its PS5 port is new, so we are expecting some bells and whistles including new trophies.

Current game owners and PS Plus Premium subscribers can expect free access to the upgrade unless Sony plans a departure from the norm.

War of the Monsters originally released in 2003 to positive reviews, and went on to be nominated for several awards. Back then, our sister site GameRevolution awarded it a B- grade, praising War of the Monsters’ destructions and “fun” levels while critizing its camera and AI issues.
