Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

UK. Today’s selection comes from Belfast City Airport, whose runway will once again be transformed into a running track for the Air Ambulance NI Runway Run. Supported by Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure, the event will take place on 11 June, offering runners the extraordinary opportunity to complete a five-kilometre run on the airport’s runway while raising essential funds for Air Ambulance NI.

The event builds on the success of last year’s event, which attracted 500 participants and raised over £60,000. The fundraising initiative directly supports Air Ambulance NI’s life-saving services, which depend entirely on public contributions to cover the £2.5 million annual operating costs.

Belfast City Airport Chief People and Marketing Officer Michelle Hatfield commented, “The Runway Run is more than just a race – it’s a celebration of community spirit in the heart of the city and a chance to give back.

Back for a second year, the Belfast City Airport Runway Run – supported by Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure – promises an unforgettable race while boosting vital support for Air Ambulance NI

“The overwhelming success of last year’s runway run showed how deeply this cause resonates with our staff, partners and the wider public, and we can’t wait to see participants take on this unforgettable challenge in such a unique setting once again.”

Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure Managing Director Steve Turner added, “We are honoured to be the Principal Sponsor of the Runway Run at Belfast City Airport. As a long-standing supporter of Air Ambulance NI, Lagan Aviation is dedicated to supporting initiatives that enhance community well-being, and we look forward to contributing to the life-saving efforts of Air Ambulance NI.

“This event not only offers a unique experience for participants but also supports the vital work of Air Ambulance NI. Its critical emergency response is crucial for our community, and we are proud to be helping Air Ambulance NI continue its invaluable mission.”

Air Ambulance NI Business Development & Project Manager Colleen Milligan said, “We’re teaming up with Belfast City Airport and Lagan Aviation for the second Air Ambulance NI Runway Run in Belfast – an unforgettable event that helps keep our essential service in the air.

Air Ambulance NI was named the official charity partner for Belfast City Airport in 2025

“With a yearly cost of £2.5 million to operate, every step our runners will take helps ensure our medical team can reach those in need, delivering urgent pre-hospital care when and where it matters most.

“Our service relies entirely on public support, and this is a fantastic way for the community to come together, have fun, and help us continue to provide critical care across Northern Ireland.”

Adding a competitive edge, running brand HOKA – known for its cushioned running shoes – will provide prizes for the top three male and female finishers.

A runway transformed to keep a vital service airborne – the Air Ambulance NI Runway Run at Belfast City Airport is an excellent example of what is possible when the aviation community comes together for a noble cause. ✈
