Finnair Plus moved to entirely revenue-based for both Avios and Tier Points last year, reducing what you earned under the previous system by up to 90%.

Revenue earning has been in place only for Finnair marketed AND operated flights, but from June 3, 2025, this also applies to Finnair MARKETED flights operated by other airlines.

You can access Finnair’s page for earning Avios and tier points here.

Key Points:

  • This change only applies to Finnair-marketed flights (i.e., Finnair flight numbers) operated by partner airlines.

  • Flights marketed by Finnair’s partners (e.g., British Airways, Iberia) will continue to earn based on distance and cabin class—even when operated by Finnair.

  • Tickets issued on or before June 2, 2025, will continue earning under the current system.

Finnair’s Email:

Our Finnair Plus program became spend-based last spring. As of 3 June 2025, you will also collect Avios and tier points based on the money spent on codeshare flight tickets purchased from Finnair. Codeshare flights are operated by our partners, which we sell in our channels with a Finnair flight number. This means that you collect Avios and tier points for Finnair codeshare flights in the same way as for scheduled Finnair flights purchased from us. The change applies to new reservations made from 3 June onwards.

Finnair Information:

From 3 June 2025 onwards, you’ll collect Avios and tier points based on the money spent on your flight ticket and the tier-specific multiplier. This means that you collect Avios and tier points for Finnair codeshare flights in the same way as for Finnair scheduled flights. The change applies to new flight bookings.

Codeshare flights are flights that are shared between two or more airlines. They have a Finnair flight number but are operated by a partner airline. Read more about codeshare flights in our FAQ.

Conclusion

If you fly on very expensive Finnair codeshares operated by partner airlines, this move will likely benefit you.

Everyone else, however, is a sore loser and will earn far fewer Avios and tier points.

These revenue-based programs essentially reward you for flying with their partners on competitive fares rather than their “home” airline.

How much sense does this make?

Finnair essentially pushes you to fly on airlines such as British Airways, Iberia, American Airlines, Japan Airlines, or Qatar Airways or on their codeshares operated by Finnair.

Insane!
