Dani Filth says Ipswich Council refused to let Ed Sheeran create a new music venue
"He's on murals all around the town. He sponsors Ipswich Town’s football kit and stuff. And yet they still didn't even give him a break on this" The post Dani Filth says Ipswich Council refused to let Ed Sheeran create a new music venue appeared first on NME.

Dani Filth has said that Ed Sheeran wanted to establish a new music venue in Ipswich but was refused permission by the local council.
The Cradle Of Filth frontman said that Sheeran was hoping to buy a vacant Toys R Us and turn it into a music venue, but Ipswich Borough Council prevented this from happening over noise-related concerns.
Speaking on the Kerrang! In Conversation podcast, Filth said he was baffled by the council’s decision, especially given the presence Sheeran has in Ipswich.
“I don’t understand Ipswich Borough Council at all, because my acquaintance / friend, Edward Sheeran, he told me he wanted to buy this Toys R Us,” he explained. “It’s been vacant for years and years and years, and he put in an offer for it – he wanted to turn it into a music venue. Ideal. Massive car park, like, perfect. Couldn’t be more perfect. On the biggest roundabout in Suffolk, right? The noisiest. It’s as you come into Ipswich, which is just perfect.
“And Ipswich Borough Council said it was going to cause too [much] noise. And I mean, Ed Sheeran to Ipswich Borough Council is like chalk to cheese, you know? They have such a relationship. You know, he’s on murals all around the town. He sponsors Ipswich Town’s football kit and stuff. And yet they still didn’t even give him a break on this. And he was buying the place! ‘I know we’re going to redevelop this place. It’s going to bring so many more people to the town.’ But no.”
Filth and Sheeran have been teasing a collaboration as far back as 2021, but it hasn’t yet seen the light of day. In January, Filth said during an appearance on The Downbeat Podcast that their collaboration was “done and dusted”.
“We did it like two years ago,” he explained (via Metal Sucks). “It was weird because we were planning to do it for about a year and a half.”
Filth continued: “I think our managers got in touch with each other somehow. His manager, Stuart [Camp], used to listen to Coal Chamber [the band featuring Cradle Of Filth manager Dez Fafara] when he was growing up.”
As for why fans have had to wait so long to hear the finished single, he told the podcast: “We didn’t wanna release it back then because we were busy with other things. Then [Sheeran] couldn’t release it because he was doing a bunch of stuff. So it’s just gonna come out when it does. We didn’t wanna put it on the album.
He continued: “It’s a brand new Cradle Of Filth song featuring Ed Sheeran, and a lot of it sounds like Ed Sheeran. He’s playing acoustic guitar, he’s singing Ed Sheeran, but a lot of it sounds like us.
“There’s a blast beat, scream. Ed really pushes himself in it as well. He does rock vocals. It’s about affirmation. It’s a bit about self-affirmation. It’s a really good song. Only about a handful of people [have heard it]. My mum hasn’t even heard it.”
Cradle of Filth have just released a new album, ‘The Screaming Of The Valkyries’. They are set to return to the UK this summer for a slot at Download Festival 2025.
Meanwhile, Sheeran recently wrote an open letter to the UK government calling for immediate and long-term funding for music education.
The letter, who is co-signed by a number of big names including Elton John, Coldplay, Central Cee, Harry Styles, Dave, Stormzy and Robert Plant, urges Keir Starmer to commit £250million towards music education.
