“Conclave” Viewership Up Ahead Of Conclave

In the wake of the death of Pope Francis on Monday, and the impending conclave in the coming weeks to choose his successor, there’s been a surge in viewership of films related to the Pope.

Variety reports that viewership of last year’s Oscar-nominated “Conclave” spiked 283% on Monday according to streaming analytics tracker Luminate.

The title jumped from 1.8 million minutes viewed on April 20th to 6.9 million by the end of April 21st. In addition, the film has shot to the top of the Apple Store movie VOD charts.

Netflix’s 2019 drama “The Two Popes” also saw a viewership spike – jumping 417% from 290,000 minutes watched on Sunday to 1.5 million minutes watched on Monday.

The analytics firm didn’t report if any such bump took place for that other Pope-related film, the Tom Hanks-led adaptation of Dan Brown’s “Angels and Demons”.

Pope Francis died at age 88 after complications from a stroke.

“Conclave” is on Amazon Prime, “The Two Popes” on Netflix and “Angels and Demons” on Hulu, all three also available on VOD.
