Chappell Roan says she’s in a “serious” relationship and “very in love”

Chappell Roan has revealed that she is in a “serious” relationship and has changed her attitude towards dating since breaking into stardom.
The pop star and NME Cover alumni shared the news while on a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, which was shared last night (March 26). During the discussion, she was ironically explaining the benefits of being single when she revealed that she was in a relationship.
When talking about how she thinks people need to be comfortable being single before they commit to relationships, the host asked Roan about her dating status, to which the ‘Pink Pony Club’ singer said she has been seeing someone for six months now.
“It’s serious. I’m very in love, but I am pro-single,” she said. “Everyone should be single. Find out for yourself if you can 100 per cent be OK alone before you date… I had a great time when I was single, and I know that I’ll be OK. Now, I have an awesome time that I’m with someone.”
While Roan didn’t specifically say how being in a committed relationship is shaping her approach to working on new material – which is expected to be the follow-up album to her debut ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’ – she did say that becoming famous has changed her perception of dating.
“I haven’t dated someone since this all really, really blew up. I’m dating the same person that I was dating before I blew up, so I’m not sure how I would date now,” she said.
“I think it would actually be a nightmare [and] I would be so single right now because you’re terrified of their intentions. I’m scared. I don’t trust anyone. I just think in my head, I’m like, any new person that I’m texting, I’m like, ‘I’m assuming they will screenshot this and send it to someone else.’”
Roan added: “Obviously, I’ve come into being more comfortable with saying I’m queer, with dating women. [But] when there’s so much of you in the world that is exposed, then being sexual with someone is so vulnerable. The rest of your life is so vulnerable that I want to save something. I just don’t wanna be that vulnerable with so many people.”

The comments about relationships and her sexuality come after Roan spoke to NME for an interview on the Cover last February, where she explained how the topics inspired the songs on her hit breakthrough album ‘The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess’.
In the discussion, she said how ‘Naked In Manhattan’ explored the internalised homophobia from her strict Christian upbringing that sat at the back of her mind.
“Well, I was dating a man and I’d never even kissed a girl,” she said about the song’s origins. “I was just yearning and longing for this feeling, and it was so close I could taste it, but I hadn’t experienced it yet.”
She also said about how writing the album led to her thinking she may receive backlash for “not being queer enough”. Explaining why, she said: “It’s kind of an imposter syndrome – that because I’ve dated men in the past, it doesn’t make me as queer as someone who has only dated queer people. Sometimes that scares me, but my project only helps affirm who I am.”
In a four-star review of her acclaimed debut album, NME wrote: “These sharp pop moments shine brighter than some of the weaker ballads that pad out the lengthy tracklist. Yet ‘The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess’ is a display of Roan’s bold and brazen pen, where she places searing revelations alongside some deliciously cheeky choruses.”
In other news, Roan recently performed a duet of ‘Pink Pony Club’ with Elton John at his Oscars viewing party. She also recently dedicated her BRIT Award win “to trans artists, to drag queens, to fashion students, sex workers, and Sinead O’Connor,” and prior to that made headlines after using her Best New Artist speech at the 67th Grammy Awards to take aim at record labels and share her past experience as a struggling new artist.
She has also been hinting at new material, recently dropping the highly anticipated single ‘The Giver’ and sharing an update on when fans can expect her sophomore album. “New album? Great question. We’re so beyond… so beyond far away from that, I could not even tell you,” she recently said.
