Renée Zellweger has joined the cast of “Only Murders In The Building” Season 5, TheWrap has learned.
Zellweger, who most recently starred in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” has been cast in a recurring guest star role on the beloved Hulu comedy series. Details of her role and storyline are still being kept under wraps. Production on the new season is currently underway with more guest stars likely to be announced.
The Oscar-winning actress will join stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as well as new cast members Christoph Waltz and Tea Leoni. Season 4 saw the trio head to Hollywood when their podcast was optioned into a movie deal. The fourth season featured a guest cast including Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Eva Longoria, Jane Lynch, Richard Kind, Melissa McCarthy, Kumail Nanjiani and Molly Shannon. Leoni was introduced at the end of Season 4 as Sofia Caccimelio. Co-creator and showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap the next season would also see Leoni returning. Details for Waltz’s role have not yet been announced.
The show has been a critical and commercial success, with Season 3 garnering 21 Emmy nominations. Season 4 also took home two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series (Martin Short).
“Only Murders in the Building,” hails from 20th Television and was created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman (“Grace & Frankie,” “Looking”). Season 4 executive producers include John Hoffman, Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal.
Zellweger is a Hollywood heavyweight who has won two Academy Awards (“Cold Mountain” and “Judy”) as well as seven Golden Globe Awards. She is known for her versatility as an actress who is adept at both drama and comedy. Some of her biggest roles include “Nurse Betty,” “Chicago,” and the “Bridge Jones” movies. She is repped by CAA, John Carrabino Management and imPRint.
