Marvel is Announcing The AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Cast in The Most Boring Hype Campaign Ever

Marvel Studios officially kicked off production on Avengers: Doomsday this morning… with a whimper. At 8am PT, they dropped a video on YouTube and social media that opened on a single director’s chair with Chris Hemsworth’s name on the back. And that’s it.Well, not quite it… but the rest hasn’t exactly been fireworks either. Every 15 minutes or so, the camera ever so slowly pans over to another chair with a name on the back of it. So far, Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Simu Liu, have been revealed. So that’s Thor, the Invisible Woman, Captain America, Bucky, Black Panther, Ant-Man, US Agent, Namor, The Thing, and Shang-Chi all locked in for the 2026 release. But… really? When I started watching, I was thinking something cool was going to go down! This is how you announce the cast of your biggest Marvel movie since Endgame? You’d think Marvel would want to come out swinging with this one. A slick teaser. A surprise livestream. A wild Kevin Feige mic drop. Instead, we’re getting a director’s chair livestream that feels like a YouTube fireplace video. It’s a bizarrely chill rollout for what should be a megaton announcement. But, maybe that’s the point. Maybe Marvel’s just toying with us. Or maybe they’ve been watching too much slow TV. Maybe it will end with a bang, something exciting and awesome! We are still in the middle of it, and I have no idea how long its going to go for. The Russo Brothers, who are returning to direct Doomsday, recently explained why they’re coming back to the MCU in the first place. Anthony Russo said:“Well, we love the genre. Some people wrote it off as a less comprehensive form of storytelling that’s more for children. But we think of it as relevant for adults, if it is treated with maturity and complexity. That’s really all it is — a commitment to storytelling.”That commitment apparently includes some course correction for the ever-growing sprawl of the Marvel Universe. When asked about the current state of the MCU, Anthony added:“Yes, the MCU has got quite large, that’s for sure. I mean, frankly, we struggle with that same issue. But part of the reason Joe and I decided to go back is exactly what you’re talking about. There needs to be more of a central narrative.”He continued: “That was something we were very specific about when we worked with Marvel [before]. We would like to bring the focused narrative back.”One of the craziest things about this whole thing is that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. Russo teased Iron Man’s death will connect with Doom: “We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story,” Russo teased. “But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”I just think it’s funny that some of the most exciting casting news Marvel’s dropped in years is being served to us through a livestream that moves at the speed of molasses. And I’m still watching.
