Folks it’s a double header today and here is my Daredevil: Born Again Episode 5 review, as per the title, it’s a filler episode, but a great one. As always, this is a SPOILER FREE review, so I’m not getting into plot specifics, or how it resolves. Though, to be honest, with Episode 5 it kinda doesn’t matter too much anyway.
Episode 5 is really a standalone episode, which has only vague references to the rest of the plot. Yet, I think this was my favourite episode so far. I’m writing this before watching Episode 6, so who knows if that stance will change?
Episode 5 feels very Marvel comic book oriented. For me anyway, it reminded me of picking up the latest Daredevil, and it’s something a little different. A one-off event in Matt’s life where we get to see the situation unfold in a way it wouldn’t had he not been there. In this situation, it’s a simple bank robbery, with Matt close at hand, and no costume.
What I loved is how simplistic it was as a concept. Basic armed bank robbery, but there happens to be a superhero vigilante amongst the hostages. Of course Matt can’t just go full on vigilante, so the episode has him using his smarts, abilities and timing to make the best of the situation.

Now, one thing some fans may take issue with is the cameos. I personally thought adding in Yusuf Khan, (Kamala’s father) just added that comic book flavour. Sure, they name drop Kamala, and even Ms. Marvel, but actually that’s just background. Yusuf as a bank employee has a part to play in the mini-story being presented. Also, the humor was on point for me. Daredevil is a gritty series, so there is a chance of death and drama and bad ends always. Yet actually, this being a standalone allows it to be the funniest episode of the series so far and still be a serious episode, with reasonably high stakes for the hostages.
Matt and Yusuf work together as characters on opposite sides of life. They both just have a chemistry which works. I even enjoyed the villain’s performance. The banter between him and the hostage negotiators was amusing and well scripted. It was just a really fun, shorter, self-contained episode. I actually hope we have a tradition going forward that every season we get a one-off episode like this. Especially when it is released concurrently with another episode so those following the plot don’t have to wait two weeks.
GRADE: A
Episode 5 is the kind of episode where you won’t be laughing, but you’ll be smiling, or grinning throughout. Well written, well made 42 min Daredevil romp.
