In the wake of the success of “Sinners” at the box-office, filmmaker Ryan Coogler has issued an emotional letter thanking everyone for their support of the film.
Posted on the film’s social media account, the lengthy letter celebrates the film winning the box office weekend and thanks “each and every” person who went to the theater and continues to talk about the movie.
Coogler is a known big supporter of the cinematic theatrical experience and says a success like this is a shot in the arm for cinemas in general:
“I believe in cinema. I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society. It’s why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft. We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up… To see your response to the film has re-invigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”
You can read the full letter here. At the same time, Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Michael DeLuca spoke with THR about the film’s winning numbers and says he and co-chief Pam Abdy are very happy:
“We kind of knew we had the goods just in terms of having watched the director’s cut, but to have the audience validate that – that’s really what’s giving us the most joy today. We’re also happy that as an original swing, it’s worked out and we hope it inspires the other studios to take more original swings because that’s how you get new franchises and keep the industry refreshed.”
Despite the $90 million production budget, the trade indicates “Sinners” only has to hit $170-180 million to break even and De Luca says he’s very bullish about that prospect: “I’m very confident that this film will be comfortably profitable.”
