Jennifer Salke has stepped down as the head of Amazon MGM Studios, the executive moving from the position to a production deal.
The announcement was made in a staff memo by Amazon Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios chief Mike Hopkins. Head of film Courtenay Valenti and head of TV Vernon Sanders will now report directly to Hopkins. Sue Kroll will continue to oversee marketing across both film and TV.
Salke’s production company will now have a first-look TV and film deal at Amazon MGM Studios.
Salke first joined Amazon in 2018 after a lengthy stint at NBC and was seen as responsible for shifting the studio’s focus away from niche indie TV fare and towards broader, bigger hits.
Though the streamer had a few hits under its belt like “Bosch,” “Transparent,” “Jack Ryan” and “The Marvelous Mr. Maisel,” under her purview is when they started delivering multiple major TV hits.
These include “The Boys,” “Reacher,” “Fallout,” “The Wheel of Time,” “The Terminal List,” “Gen V,” “Invincible,” “Jury Duty,” “Expats,” “Dead Ringers,” “Cross,” “Beast Games” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Film wise she’s also had some successes with works like “Saltburn,” “Challengers,” “The Beekeeper,” “The Tomorrow War,” “The Boys in the Boat,” “American Fiction,” “One Night in Miami,” “Red, White & Royal Blue,” “Red One,” “Road House,” “Creed III,” “Women Talking,” “Nickel Boys” and “The Idea of You”.
Some titles haven’t fared so well, most notably the massively costly “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and “Citadel” series, the former failing to live up to what it should’ve been and the latter a disastrous flop. Her inability to get along with former James Bond franchise steerers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, thus stalling any work on the crown jewel of Amazon’s MGM acquisition, may also have played a part in her exit.
Her departure comes as “Reacher” took the top slot on Nielsen’s latest weekly streaming ratings.
