Patti Smith tribute in pics & videos: Bruce Springsteen, Karen O, Michael Stipe & more

Patti Smith was honored at this year’s “The Music Of” benefit at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday (3/26), which raises money for music education programs for underserved youth. It was an especially star-studded lineup, and while The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde wound up not being able to make it, on hand were Matt Berninger of The National (who did “Piss Factory), Jesse Malin (“Free Money”), Courtney Barnett (“Redondo Beach”), Sharon Van Etten (“Pissing in the River”), Michael Stipe (who was joined by Patti’s daughter Jesse Paris Smith on “My Blakean Year”), Alison Mosshart (who covered “Ask the Angels,” and joined Johnny Depp later on “Dancing Barefoot”), Paul Banks of Interpol (who was joined by his partner Juliet Seger on “Mother Rose”), Body/Head (aka Kim Gordon & Bill Nace, the former of whom brought her own copy of Patti’s Witt along), Angel Olsen (“Easter”), Glen Hansard (“Beneath the Southern Cross”), Maggie Rogers (“Frederick”), Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs (“Gloria”), Bruce Springsteen (“Because the Night,” which he wrote with Patti), and more. They were joined by a house band that included HeartbreakersBenmont Tech, Charlie Sexton, Tony Shanahan from Patti’s band, Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Flea, and Rolling Stones‘ Steve Jordan.

There were also recitations of Patti’s poetry and other writing from Michael Shannon, Sean Penn, Scarlett Johansson, and Jim Jarmusch. At the end of the night, Patti herself came out and recited one of her poems, “Cry Humanity.” She followed that by performing “Peaceable Kingdom,” and that led into a big group rendition of “People Have the Power” with all of the evenings’ performers to close out the night.
