Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Sparks 125 FCC Complaints

125 viewers sent in complaints to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in relation to Kendrick Lamar's recent Super Bowl Halftime Show, with the objections expressing disapproval over the use of language, "provocative dancing" and "racism" as “not one white person” appeared alongside the rapper. In records obtained by The Hill as part of a Freedom of Information Act request, several viewers from across the country accused the halftime show of being inappropriate for children. “The halftime show was terrible with the language and gestures. My younger kids did not need to see and hear this!” a viewer from Illinois wrote, while another from North Carolina referred to it as "the worst halftime show I have ever seen," adding, “I’m glad that I couldn’t understand most of what Kendrick Lamar was saying because I read the lyrics to a few of his songs, and I am appalled. It was divisive, downgrading, and filled with profanity. It is absolutely not appropriate entertainment for all ages.”Another viewer suggested that the next halftime show performer should be "family friendly and not socially or politically centered." The viewer continued, “It would be a nice change to have entertainment that truly shows what America should be; family, country, decency and respect. It is tiresome to have to send children out of the room during what should be a family event due to possible vulgarity and inappropriate language/gestures.”However, as The Hill wrote, networks normally censor profanity during the halftime show performances, and there were no specific lyrics called out by the viewers.Others who tuned in labelled Dot's performance as "racist" and "anti-white," with a viewer from Maryland writing, "There wasn’t one white person in the whole show...They get away with it but if it was all white it would be a different story. The halftime show should have both Black and white and be appropriate for everyone. This was a disgrace and it gets worse every year.” One viewer from Florida stated that they "felt discriminated against" and was "very uncomfortable," then questioned why Samuel L. Jackson's Uncle Sam was Black "when Uncle Sam is white." A complaint from Pennsylvania wrote, “A varied selection of talented performers would have been much better and all inclusive.”Lamar's halftime show saw Jackson, Serena Williams, SZA and Mustard join him on stage as he performed cuts from GNX, DAMN. and his Drake diss tracks "euphoria" and "Not Like Us."Click here to view full gallery at Hypebeast
