Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong came out in a ‘Brat’ hat at Coachella, seemingly squashing rumours of tensions between them and Charli XCX after their fans warred on social media.

Weekend one of the Californian festival saw Charli bring out a handful of the artists featured on the ‘Brat‘ remix album, ‘Brat and it’s completely different but also still brat‘, with her set on the Main Stage falling before Green Day’s headline slot.

Charli was later pictured at an afterparty wearing a sash that read: “Miss should be headliner”, drawing backlash from Green Day fans online, with some deeming it insensitive given punk icons using their set to address the atrocities in Palestine and take aim at Donald Trump.

Green Day’s weekend one headline performance saw them alter a ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ lyric to reference the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, with frontman Armstrong singing, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine/Tales from another broken home,” replacing the original line, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”

“Green day making a political statement about shit that actually matters > pop girlies singing about coke,” wrote one unimpressed fan, with more weighing in about the size of their respective audiences. “Charli xcx letting hype get to her head,” added one X/Twitter user. “Green Day used their Coachella headliner slot to speak up for good. They are still bigger than her.”
