‘The Wheel of Time’ Season 3, Episode 5 Ending Explained: How Does the Dream World Work?

After glimpses and mentions in the first two season, “The Wheel of Time” Season 3 is finally diving deeper into Tel’aran’rhiod – the Dream World.

The fifth episode of the third season largely focuses on Egwene (Madeleine Madden) learning from Bair (Nukâka Coster-Waldau) and Melaine (Salóme Gunnarsdóttir) how to travel the Dream World. She learns that her uncontrolled thoughts can manifest in different ways in Tel’aran’rhiod – she gets scared and manifests herself in armor – and that any harm done here happens in the waking world.

Egwene is a rare dreamwalker, allowing her greater access to the Dream World when she wishes, but Bair warns her that every time she enters the dream “is to take a risk.” Her power in the world startles the Wise Ones as she vanishes and appears in Dream World Tar Valon where she learns she is being hunted by Lanfear (Natasha O’Keeffe) while she sleeps. Luckily she is woken before too much damage is done but her neck is marked by the attack.

The episode ends with Egwene guiding Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) back through the Dream World so she can talk with Siuan (Sophie Okonedo) about what she saw in Rhuidean. While the pair talk, Egwene hops into the dreams of her hometown friends, enjoying a peek at their happy dreams – until she gets to Rand (Josha Stradowski) who she sees kissing Lanfear. Egwene and her forsaken hunter make eye contact as the episode ends.

The Dream World is a cornerstone of The Wheel of Time story for the remainder of the series but it’s also a confusing component of it. Below, we break down what you need to know about Tel’aran’rhiod, how it works, and what changes are being made from book to show.

What is Tel’aran’rhiod – the Dream World?

Tel’aran’rhiod – also called the Dream World or the Unseen World in the Old Tongue – is not just a place where people go when they are asleep. It is a parallel world where several possibilities and threads from The Wheel of Time converge.

Tel’aran’rhiod contains a multitude of various worlds that exist within the Wheel. The Dream is both one of those worlds and stands apart from them all.

How does the Dream World work?

Anyone can access the Dream World but only dreamwalkers – like Egwene – can enter it by choice. Most stumble into Tel’aran’rhiod on accident while asleep but only manage a few seconds there before being forced out or waking up.

A part of that is because the Dream World is an extremely dangerous place. Despite it being a place of dreams, the threats in Tel’aran’rhiod are very real. Any injuries sustained in the Dream World are carried back into the waking world – which is why some who stumble into it unknowingly often wake up with mysterious bruises. Being killed in Tel’aran’rhiod also ends up with said person dying in their sleep in the waking world.

Once in the Dream World, a well-trained dreamwalker is very powerful. They can jump around the world while their body sleeps. They can also change their clothes, appearance and give themselves weapons with a single thought.

What are the differences between Tel’aran’rhiod in the show vs. the books?

One of the big differences so far in the show is who all has access to Tel’aran’rhiod at this point in the story. While Egwene learns to dreamwalk from the Aiel Wise Ones, Nynaeve (Zoë Robins) and Elayne (Ceara Coveney) use a dream Ter’angreal – a specific magical item that allows non-dreamwalkers easier access to the Dream World – to pass along information. The three use Tel’aran’rhiod throughout the series while split up to keep in contact with each other during their hunt for the Black Ajah.

The other major character who spends a lot of time within Tel’aran’rhiod who has not visited much to this point in Season 3 is Perrin (Marcus Rutherford). Perrin accesses the Dream World through his connection to wolves and what they call the Wolf Dream. It is unclear how deep into the Wolf Dream the show plans to go but his current Season 3 story in Emond’s Field hinges a bit more on Tel’aran’rhiod than has been explored so far.
