The first time Seth Rogen met Ike Barinholtz he thought the fellow comedic actor was nothing more than Danny McBride’s assistant.
Rogen and Barinholtz revealed as much during a Sirius XM Town Hall interview with “Real Housewives” producer Andy Cohen on Wednesday. According to both men, who co-star right now in the Apple TV+ comedy series “The Studio,” they met under unlikely circumstances years ago when they were both in North Carolina at the same time.
“I was shooting ‘Eastbound & Down’ with Danny McBride, and he called me and was like, ‘Hey, do you know Seth Rogen?’ I was like, ‘I know who he is,'” Barinholtz recalled. “He goes, ‘Do you have any weed?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, I have a little.’ He goes, ‘Can you go down to room 237 and give Seth Rogen some weed?'”
Rogan then shared his side of the story: “What’s funny is, from my perspective, I arrive in North Carolina to shoot an episode of Danny’s show and I call when I get there and I’m like, ‘I didn’t bring any weed here. Do you know anyone with weed?’ And he’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna send Ike over to your room.’ I got a knock on the door and it’s Ike, who I thought was Danny’s assistant, and so I wasn’t — I don’t think I was rude to you — but I was just like, ‘Thank you.'”
Barinholtz was understandably let down by his first meeting with Rogen. “[I’d] been wanting to meet him for years. I was really excited,” Barinholtz confessed. Ultimately, it was not until some time later — and with the help of a piece of “Eastbound & Down” merchandise — that Rogen “slowly pieced together that [Barinholtz] was an actor.”
“That night, we all went to a bar and my character on the show, they made a t-shirt with my face on it [that] the fans could wear,” Barinholtz explained. “A bunch of the crew members were wearing that t-shirt one night.” When he saw said crew members wearing shirts with Barinholtz’s face on them, Rogen joked, “I was like, ‘This guy’s a popular assistant!'”
The two later worked together when Barinholtz starred in the 2018 sex comedy “Blockers,” which Rogen produced. Currently, Barinholtz stars in “The Studio” as Sal Saperstein, a Hollywood studio executive who serves as a close confidant and advisor to Rogen’s Matt Remick, an idealistic cinephile who is named the head of the fictional Continental Studios and subsequently exposed to the mercenary, corporate side of the entertainment industry.
New episodes of “The Studio” premiere Wednesdays on Apple TV+. You watch the full segment in the video above. SiriusXM’s “Andy Cohen Live” airs Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. ET on Radio Andy (Ch. 102), and anytime on the SiriusXM app.
