Rug becomes a resting place with Dune rug-chaise hybrid

I’m a fan of product designs that are both aesthetic and functional, even if I would probably not have the more eccentric (and expensive ones) in my space. I also like it when designers are able to turn things that have an original purpose into something that serves another purpose. Rugs have served as grounding elements in our homes, traditionally placed underfoot, defining areas, and adding warmth and texture. This new collaboration, however, dared to see if a rug could offer more and if it could rise up, quite literally, to become a place of rest and contemplation.

Designers: BUDDE and Nando Studio

The lines between furniture and textiles are delightfully blurred with DUNE, a groundbreaking collaboration between German design studio BUDDE and Cologne-based Nando Studio. Unveiled at Milan Design Week at Galleria Rossana Orlandi, this isn’t just a rug; it’s a sculptural piece that seamlessly transforms into a functional chaise lounge, inviting a fresh perspective on how we interact with our living spaces. Inspired by the fluid, windswept landscapes embraced by nomadic desert cultures, this chaise pays homage to the rug’s historical significance as both a gathering point and a place to recline.

This innovative design cleverly retains the essence of a traditional rug while incorporating a subtle yet ingenious structural element. Users have the freedom to appreciate it in its flat, familiar form as a rug. But when the mood for relaxation strikes, it can be effortlessly transformed into an inviting chaise lounge, offering a unique and comfortable space to unwind.
